Key points

  • Therapy, medication, and lifestyle support are often used together, and the right combination depends on the person.
  • Outpatient care is the most common starting point; residential care is generally for people who need 24-hour support.
  • Crisis support is available 24/7 by calling or texting 988.

The main types of mental health care

  • Individual therapy: talk-based treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and trauma-focused approaches.
  • Psychiatric care: evaluation, medication management, and ongoing monitoring by a psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse practitioner, or physician.
  • Group therapy and skills programs: structured sessions for coping skills, emotion regulation, and relapse prevention.
  • Intensive outpatient mental health programs: several sessions a week for people who need more support than weekly therapy.
  • Residential mental health treatment: 24-hour care in a structured setting for people who cannot be safely supported at home.
  • Peer support and community programs: drop-in centers, warm lines, and mutual-help groups.

Depression, anxiety, and trauma

Depression and anxiety are among the most common reasons people seek treatment, and both respond to several evidence-based approaches, including therapy, medication, or a combination. Trauma-related conditions can require a slower, more structured approach, and effective therapy for trauma is generally provided by clinicians with specific training.

If symptoms are making it hard to work, care for yourself, or stay safe, that is a signal to seek care sooner rather than waiting for a convenient time.

When substance use and mental health overlap

Substance use and mental health conditions frequently co-occur, and integrated treatment that addresses both at the same time usually works better than treating them one at a time. Ask a program how they coordinate psychiatric care with addiction treatment, and whether the same team provides both.

Paying for mental health care

Most insurance plans in the United States are required to cover mental health and substance use treatment at parity with medical benefits, though network availability, prior authorization, and deductibles still shape what you pay. Community mental health centers, federally qualified health centers, and university training clinics often offer sliding-scale fees. See our insurance and costs page for how to check your benefits.

Crisis and emergency support

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free, confidential support by phone, text, or chat, 24 hours a day. If someone is in immediate danger or is at risk of seriously harming themselves or another person, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
