Questions to Ask When Choosing a Treatment Center

Treatment centers are not interchangeable, and marketing language tends to sound alike. Asking the same questions of each program is the fastest way to see real differences.

Key points

  • Ask about credentials and staffing before amenities.
  • Get cost estimates and discharge planning in writing.
  • Treat urgency pressure and guaranteed outcomes as warning signs.

Clinical care

  • Who provides medical care, and what are their credentials?
  • Is a physician or nurse practitioner on site overnight?
  • What is the ratio of clinical staff to patients?
  • How is withdrawal managed, and which medications are used?
  • Is there a psychiatrist or prescriber available, and how often do patients see them?
  • What evidence-based therapies does the program use?

Program structure and fit

  • What does a typical day look like, hour by hour?
  • How long is the program, and how is the length decided?
  • Is the facility licensed and accredited, and by whom?
  • How is family involved, and what consent is required?
  • What happens if someone needs a higher or lower level of care mid-program?
  • Can they accommodate medical conditions, disabilities, or dietary needs?

Money

  • What is the total cost for the expected length of stay?
  • What is not included — labs, medication, psychiatry, housing, transport?
  • What will my insurance cover, and what will I owe?
  • Is prior authorization required, and who handles it?
  • What happens if I leave early?

After discharge

Continuing care is where treatment either holds together or unravels. Ask whether a written discharge plan is provided, who arranges the next appointment, whether medication continues, and how the program follows up in the first weeks after treatment.

Warning signs

  • Guaranteed outcomes or claims about success rates that cannot be documented.
  • Pressure to commit immediately because a bed is "about to go."
  • Refusal to give written cost information before admission.
  • Claims of insurance coverage that your insurer contradicts.
  • Staff who cannot explain the clinical approach in plain language.
